"HELP" of Denia and Marina Alta

Fundraising

Despite the present economic conditions and competition from other associations and charities this year has been reasonably successful as far as fund raising is concerned.

To begin this year Jane and Jeff Corbett entertained almost 200 guests  at our Theatre/Dinner event held at Los Arcos in January.(Acts of Love)  Something completely different in its format, with ‘acts’ between courses. This format attracted quite a lot of favourable comment and is something we will consider doing sometime in the future.

We had ongoing support from the UK in the form of a quiz which has been compiled by Margaret of Holbeach. She has compiled another quiz (100 questions), aptly named ‘Viva Espana’. Incidentally Margaret also sold this quiz on our behalf to her contacts in Lincolnshire. This she did last year and quite successfully.

In April our 7 km annual walk along the Mediterranean from las Menas Restaurant at Las Rotes took place.  Although there were not as many ‘walkers’ as in past years I believe we raised approximately the same amount as last year,

In early May we held the HELP Antique Road Show at the Art Centre Association of Javea.  Lorely Griffiths, who runs the art centre, organised nine experts specialising in various different types of antiques to value items at a cost of €3 each.  The proceeds went to HELP.  Lorely’s garden is a delight and although the proceedings were not due to start until 10 we had eager people knocking on the door at 8.30.  Approx €950 was made.  Entertainment was supplied by the stupendous barbershop style choir, the “Costa Barber Singers

Jalon HELP held its annual summer fete and HELP of Denial and La Marina Alta attended.  We provided a lucky dip for children but unfortunately because of inclement weather not many children appeared.    Although the day was virtually a wash out Jalon HELP did extremely well.

In June Jean Bunn organized her annual quiz and dinner at the Orange Grove.  The evening was a great success.

On 29th July El Cid organised an auction for HELP of Denia and La Marina Alta.  This event too was well attended and we’d like to thank, once again, our members who donated their possessions.  The joint lots which attracted the highest amounts were a large selection of beautiful bedding and there were many other outstanding items for sale.  On 26th August a cheque for €1,600 was presented to Pat Lee Patton at the El Cid Restaurant.

At the request of quite a few members an afternoon meal starting at 3.00 pm was organised on 13th October.  We had our lunch at Karma in October.  I do believe the food was really appreciated by most and the entertainment provided by Len and funded by Bernadette and Martin Dunster went down very well.  The only downside was there was just a little too much sun for some people!

The Jalon and Orba Lions organised a sky dive and brave Steve Patton gamely took part.  Making a substantial amount in sponsorship

Christmas Fair is being held at Casa Holanda on 10th December and this year we have some extra attractions, such as Tarot reader and a human fruit machine.
